Time For A Remake

I saw this film as an 11 year old in 1969. Viet-Nam was raging & the country was torn. Hail Hero was a sneak preview at the 163rd Street Theater in North Miami Beach, Florida. Micheal Douglas was strictly known as Kirk's son, and there was a lot of interest to see if he "could" act.

The acting is outstanding and so is the story line. Things never seem to change. War has been around since the beginning of time, and so has serving in the military and defending one's country. The most shocking aspect here was the dead mummy baby in the shoe box. Lots of symbolic levels here and it's clear that this movie is no longer out of date.

This would be a good movie to remake today. I'd rate Hail Hero as a 10.

Just plain stupid.....

The plots for this film are VERY unusual and very confusing. It all starts with Richard Widmark insulting an idiotic Mexican guy (Topol of all people) and then marrying a nympho with a strange family curse. She is super-rich but also super sex-crazed. There are LOTS of strange subplots involving the children of the various characters--and all of it seems, well, confusing.

"A Talent for Loving" is like a train wreck--a terribly unfunny train wreck. I have rarely seen a film try so very hard to be funny and fail at it so miserably. It's a sex spoof-comedy-western--and does a lousy job in all three categories. As a sexy film, it never really delivers and provides lots of innuendos but nothing that is terribly sexy. As a comedy, it's just not funny and tries in a shotgun manner to get laughs. In other words, throw enough silly situations and vignettes into the film and PERHAPS one of them will make you laugh...or not! As a western, it's not entertaining--especially with a lot of non-Indians playing the Indians (sort of like Mel Brooks playing an Indian in "Blazing Saddles"). It's terrible and I can see why it was never released theatrically. And, in many ways, it reminds me of the 1967 version of "Casino Royale"--another sex comedy that simply is unfunny and rarely sexy.

A bad film is practically every way and I am sure that this was a big source of embarrassment for all those involved.

Idyllic presentation that still speaks today.

I was so happy to have finally found this movie on DVD. This movie was always a favorite of mine and it was the impetus for me to read many of Sterling North's books. This movie spoke to me on a level no other did or has since. However, watching it as an adult is a completely different experience. I see the flaws in it and why it was never a big blockbuster. The action is a bit draggy and the narration is lackluster except to maybe those who know Walter Pidgeon from his earlier years as a movie star. The soundtrack is also a bit overly sweet, but I didn't pay any attention to those things when I was a child. The movie is still enjoyable and I am sure that many children will love it. What I found that I like about it is the scenery and the idyllic presentation of a time that lives only in memory. This movie is filled with actors from a previous era: Steve Forrest and Elsa Lanchester to begin with. But there are also character actors whose names you may not recognize, but whose faces or voices you certainly will. (Think Piglet from Winnie the Pooh!) I wish Disney would release this with extras - like reminisces from the actors themselves. I still like this movie and found it is not diminished with time. It is still beautiful.

False Info by Other Poster

The poster above me said, "For this fight, the computer used a ton of attributes for Ali and Marciano, and came up with a decision as to who would be the best fighter ever. To film this fight, they did film the two sparring, despite both fighters already being in retirement (Rocky for many more years than Ali)."

That is false. When Muhammad Ali retired, Marciano was already DEAD for years. Marciano died in 1969 at the young age of 45. Marciano and Ali shot the footage in 1968-early 1969. Aside from that, the DVD was a very good one, and I think as years go on, many, many, many boxing fans will be adding this one to their collection. I give this DVD production 5 out of 5.

Bad quality Recording can't hide quality film

I have seen Mol'ba (this movie's russian title) only on a tape that was of incredibly poor quality and I think was missing the ending (although I guess I can't really be too sure) but I've seen enough to know this is one of the greatest films to have ever been made.

The movie is based on what I think are fragments from epic poems of a medieval Georgian (that's Georgia the country, do I really need to say that?) poet. In fact, all the lines of dialogue in this film are word-for word from the poems themselves. You may already be developing an idea that this movie is like a filmed play, which normally doesn't make movies which are any good. But no, this movie is nothing like a play, and in fact, could not have been made into one.

Why? Because throughout the movie, none of the actors on screen open their mouths. This is not to say that they don't talk to each other or there are no lines of dialogue. No, simply the dialogue is voiced by the actors themselves, but while the sound of their voice is played, the camera zooms in to the face of whomever is supposed to be speaking. I find it hard to explain, but it creates a sense of people communicating in thoughts as they talk in different with their mouths closed while still giving the full range of facial expressions.

I admit, at first that sounds like a gimmick. And maybe, if 100 movies were made in this way 99 of them would turn out to be just that - gimmick movies. But for some reason, Mol'ba transcends that. It must be a testament to the actors that real emotion can be sensed and felt along without the use of speech and that the voices appear so inseparably attached to the faces.

The main story itself is also a powerful one, and for that noone is to thank but the medieval poet. It centres around two settlements who are steeped in an agelong enmity against each other. The 'main character' is a fearsome fighter for one side, who, after a long fight against his adversary from the other, refuses to cut off the dying man's hands as a sign of respect for the opponent. The main character then is no longer welcome in either settlement

  • his own people despise him for what they see as weakness and lack of

understanding of the suffering the other side has caused them. The others hate him for the numerous fighters of theirs that he has killed and families he left orphaned. Yet, because the story is centuries old, it can be both very powerful and not at all hard to understand, in the way Shakespeare sometimes is, if you don't mind all the metaphors and such.

Another thing that works in Mol'ba's favour is that it's black&white. I can't imagine such a movie being in colour. Although I'd really like to see a better recording, and I don't think there's any available to buy in North America.

Oh well, the movie is still a masterpiece.

a man is hired to impersonate a millionaire that is his lookalike and is involved in very dangerous businesses

I liked some parts of it and disliked others. This is an average spy thriller with many typical ingredients of the 1960's James Bond movies parodies. At times reminded me of the much superior Mario Bava's "Diabolik", probably because of many car chase and sea resort scenes and two sultry women in mini-skirts: Anita Ekberg and Margaret Lee. The protagonist is the often wooden actor John Richardson (the hero of the Hammer's kitsch movie "She" with Ursula Andress). He is a man that gets involved in a dangerous spy game when he is offered a huge amount of money by the ambiguous Fernando Rey (Luis Bunuel's favourite actor and prestigious international character actor) to impersonate a millionaire who happens to be persecuted by various gangs that try to chase and kill him. There is a subplot of international weapon-smuggling, money washing and other criminal activities based in Gibraltar between Afrika and Europe. The most appealing aspect of this movie is his interesting cast: Anita Ekberg looks great specially in the train scenes when she first meets the hero and she brings some genuine warm to an underwritten character that she seems to play with a certain detachment. Fernando Rey shows his usual professionalisms and it was also nice to see some good Spanish actors playing small parts. The direction and the plot are routine, but most of it is well filmed. However, the movie is slow paced and you feel often bored.
