Succulent Bava, served extra-rare
A note: Was this movie ever called in English HATCHET FOR A HONEYMOON, rather than the awkward HATCHET FOR THE HONEYMOON? I seem to recall this from a Leonard Maltin book circa 1978. Or am I as cracked as Bava's protagonist?
For my money, this is primo vintage Bava--which is to say Dario Argento in top hat and tails, Jess Franco with a finishing-school diploma, or, to look at the glass as half empty, Richard Lester after three hits of dirty windowpane acid.
To top this voiceover narration, you'd have to go either to BARRY LYNDON or, on the other hand, MASSACRE MAFIA STYLE: "My name is John Harrington. I'm thirty years old. I am a paranoiac. Paranoiac! What a marvellous world. So delicate. And full of possibilities. The fact is, I'm completely mad." And so is Bava's odyssey through the crazy-straw-shaped brain of J. Harrington, Esq., a hunky sociopath whose sexual fires are only stoked by burying a hatchet in the flesh of virginal-looking brides in their white-veiled drag--and, when they have the ill fortune to be there, their bridegrooms.
The hyper-lusciosity of Bava's style suggests a Bertolucci blissfully unconcerned with agrarian collectivism. Mate that rococo with Nicolas Roeg's brand of kaleidoscopus maximus and you have an inkling of what Signior Mario is up to. Note to Greil Marcus: as a sequel to "Lipstick Traces," how about a book tracing the parallel histories of canonical surrealism (Bunuel-Dali-Aragon-Bataille) and Italian horror of the seventies?

Does it really contrast socialization with instinct?
The film is well made with good performances by Victor the wild child as well as Truffaut as his doctor and father figure.
Truffaut's main concern is studying what humans really are when you strip away the socialization process. Do we have morals? Language abilities? Compassion? This was also the main question for Dr. Itard who raised the boy after he was found.
However, the legitimacy of the wild child is called into question early in the film. Is Victor a normal human child or was there something abnormal about him that caused his family to abandon him? If he was abnormal to begin with, then we really can't conclude anything about what humanity would be like without the socialization process.
Reading through Dr. Itard's notes, many have concluded that Victor was an autistic child. His parents probably found him uncontrollable and abandoned him in the woods. So while Dr. Itard believed he was seeing the results of a normal boy with no socialization, he was probably seeing the results of a normal autistic child.
Despite this problem, the film is still interesting to watch but it ends up raising more questions than it answers.

A truly wretched, nausea-inducing waste of film
You know those "worst films of all time" lists? This one tops my list!
How to describe it? The film is a long pointless diatribe against the West and an endorsement of French Communism. The film supposedly illustrates crimes against society committed by the west but the acting (and costuming) looked like a Haight Ashbury Summer'o'Love stock production.
The film is very grainy. Apparently Godard shot it on 8mm film. His disciples then blew it up to 35mm for its extremely limited arthouse release. The copy I suffered through had been shrunk back to 16mm (the format for rental films).
Oh, and the narration? Godard's diatribe is delivered by a somewhat bored Frenchman. That was bad enough but Godard's disciples had added an English-speaking female narrator to make the politics accessible to western audiences. The problem was, Godard refused to let them delete the French voicetrack! So.... for two wretched hours, the French and English narrations go on SIMULTANEOUSLY! Add to this the lousy acting, minimal production, and grainy film and you have EXCEDERIN HEADACHE #1.

A beautiful film about native african animals presented in a nice personal story line
I was starting to watch this film, shortly after it started and liking nature fils, kept looking. I was pleasantly surprised, as the film showed the african nature in a interesting, quite personal and often funny way.
Bill and Ginny are invited by a naturalist friend to take care of his home in Africa while he is away, and they find themselves adopted by three orphan elephants an end, don't want to leave this paradise any more. By living there, they get in contact with a lot of animals and they have to find a way to live with them, hence they need to understand them. Of course they have at first all sorts of funny ideas and prejudices, but slowly discover the real truth through all sorts of funny incidents. All this set before the picturesque landscape of kenya, this makes truly a film to watch for the whole family or everybody who wants to have an enjoyable saturday or sunday arvo. Oh, i forgot. The main character is poly-poly (or slowly-slowly), an adorable 5 year young elephant that follows the couple around like a dog. I really like this film! Enjoy.

When the French army took control of the country we call Mexico, they counted on one factor to help them subdue the population, . . . fear! The use of Fear, through, intimation, torture, and outright execution worked, but not in the way they thought it would. The French brutality had an effect alright, it had the disastrous consequence of cementing the people, their friends and hundreds of mercenaries into an avenging force. Although there are many stories of the revolution, several stand out as movie classics. The Professionals, is one favorite, another is, "Two Mules for Sister Sara." In this story we have an American mercenary (Clint Eastwood) named Hogan who has bitter memories of the Civil War and decides to try for a quick Gold fortune in Mexico. He agrees to help Mexican Col. Beltran (Manuel Fabregas) take the French Garrison in exchange for half the treasury. Along the way, Hogan is joined by a traveling Catholic Nun, named Sister Sara (Shirley MacLaine) who has more secrets than just fear of being captured by the French. Innicially captured by three whiskey drinking rouges who strip, humiliate and threaten the beautiful Nun, she becomes a surprising and necessary ally. In their wondering, they save each other's life until the end, when Hogan is completely shocked with Sister Sara as she reveals her most guarded secret. I loved the movie, especially it's memorable and haunting theme at the beginning of the film. Superb! ****

Very good police procedural and nice modern noir
Lino Ventura is simply perfect as this noir hero, too professional to rebel against the absurdity of his job. But why would they have him wear a small hat? The big broad-shouldered, former pro wrestler, Lino Ventura in brown-over-black 1970 style (remember Shaft?), OK, but who wears a hat in 1970? It makes him look like Inspector Clouseau. In the book Francis X. Kerrigan wears a dust jacket, OK this is the overused private coat, but keep it simple, in tune and in genre.
Fortunately the story is good, it's a sharp and clean police procedural and it shows that José Giovanni loved it. He loved that it displayed a stubborn officer walking his beat in the midst of general hostility against police. It was really fashionable to criticise the police around 1969 and Giovanni is happy to drive the point home more than once, most prominently in Paul Crauchet's monologue, but generally in the absurdity of Lino Ventura's assignments. Subtlety is definitely not Giovanni's forte but here it blends well with the simple police procedural.
All in all this could have been a tremendous modern noir with a better director (Melville, Sautet). The result doesn't show important directorial choices. Camera work and editing are average, and sound editing is poor while François de Roubaix's score would have been sufficient to carry most of the images. In the end you will feel as if the movie simply vanishes from your memory while you were really rooting for Ventura and Joubert minutes before.

SURPRISE BLACK COMEDY FROM THE U.K.!
I saw this on release (at age 17 or 18) and it reminded me of NOTHING. A year later, SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE reminded me of this cool, sinister and hilarious dark comedy from the British Isles. Vanessa Howard (don't know much about her) is prime psycho, post-nubile, upbeat girl and the rest of her family - Sonny, Mumsy, Nanny and all their unwilling and baffled friends make for a tasty stew of late 60's/early 70's pseudo-art..I believe.
A 7 out of 10. Best performance = Vanessa Howard. This film is tough to find on VHS and I don't think it's on DVD, but seek it out if you like clean black humor from England, with teasing, death, witty dialogue and a cast that's born for the task.

Even more bizarre than "Daisies"!
"The Fruit of Paradise" is a breathtaking experimental film from Vera Chytilova. Well known for her surreal feminist comedy "Daisies" (1966), Chytlova uses many of the same hallucinatory camera tricks for "The Fruit of Paradise". I used to think that the film "Begotten" was original until I saw the "Fruit of Paradise". The film's first 15 minutes is highly psychedelic as it tells the story of creation. There are layers of image on top of image with fast camera cuts. The film almost made my head spin with it's fast pace, use of color and bizarre experimental sound effects. Then it breaks out into a song about Adam & Eve, which is hauntingly catchy. Now if only I could learn Czech. Then the story of Adam and Eve goes to a modern setting. The devil is portrayed as creepy man of middle age; a persistent stalker and serial killer of women. Eva and her boyfriend go on vacation to a health spa, where they encounter temptation. The devil gets Eva to eat the forbidden fruit. Then the film becomes very comical throughout, as the Devil chases adorable Eva everywhere she goes. Very deep, surreal and philosophical, "The Fruit of Paradise" is another underrated masterpiece to Czech out! Another late 60's British time capsule
This is another late 60's British time capsule recently dug up and released on legitimate DVD. Some may prefer that it had stayed buried, but I thought it was OK. It is a portmanteau sex comedy featuring three stories--one that is mostly sex, one that is mostly comedy,and a third that is just plain weird. It is another collaboration between British exploitation filmmakers Stanley Long and Derek Ford. It's not as good as the pair's previous effort "Groupie Girl", but it's better than their debut film "Wife Swappers" (as well as pretty much any of Derek Ford's subsequent work).
The stories all involve working-class male slobs getting lucky as the result of a case of mistaken identity. The first story involves a lowly camera assistant (Dennis Waterman) who is seduced by a man-eating actress (Vonda Hudson) after the latter mistakes him for the teenage son of a producer she's trying to get a part from (normally actresses just sleep with the producer himself, but, oh well). The second story involves a pathetic slob who's about to commit suicide when a pretty girl (Vanessa Howard)and a bunch of her swinging friends (including Valerie Leon and Alexandra Bastedo) mistakenly show up at his apartment looking for a party, and think this particular party has a "suicide" theme. The last story has a taxi driver taking a sexy female fare (Yutte Stensgaarde) to a remote location, and after she stiffs him (in more ways than one), he follows her to a strange house (actually filmed in France!)where all kinds of indescribable weirdness is happening.
The voluptuous Vonda Hudson has about 90 percent of the nude scenes here, but she can't really act otherwise. Vanessa Howard, as always, is very cute and adorable--and genuinely talented as an actress--but her character is both underdeveloped and overdressed. Danish pastry Yutte Stensgaarde would become famous a couple years later for "Lust for a Vampire", but she doesn't have much of a role here (except she does swim topless with two girlfriends and lies naked on the floor covered in fruit in a scene that appears to be partly cut). Perhaps, the most memorable scene in the last story (and the whole movie) though might a VERY STRANGE striptease scene involving a woman whose body is covered only with "pasties" in the shape of black hands, which she slowly peels off and then puts them over a two-way mirror through which the poor protagonist is trying to watch her. The music, like with "Groupie Girl", is third-rate British Invasion stuff and consists of only two songs, but it's pretty good actually. I kind of liked this overall.

a touching and simple story.
An old farmhand wants to save his old horse from being gored in the bull ring. He leaves everything to lead Ulysse, the horse, to the safety and freedom of the Camargue National Park. Beautiful images, excellent acting, with a little bit of comedy thrown in and music by the great Georges Brassens.

Monsters from all genres!
In this story, our hero Santo, called "Sampson" in English, must wrestle against an array of monsters:
(1) Frankenstein's Monster, complete with neck bolts (2) The Wolfman (3) Dracula, escorted by fanged female helpers (4) The Creature from the Black Lagoon (5) The Mummy
The monsters are controlled by a mad scientist (what else?), whose laboratory is located in an old castle. As expected, the scientist is rotten to the core and has all kinds of evil schemes in the works. The monsters and laboratory look great - all classic horror movie stuff!
Poor Santo is way outnumbered. Fortunately, the monsters can only come out at night (even though it often looks like daytime, at least to this viewer).
How can Santo defeat the monsters and stop the scientist?? You will have to watch the movie to find out!
Great fun.

A fisherman saves Anada, a woman adrift, from drowning. He takes her to his home, and protects her. Eventually, she occupies a larger place than was to be expected. He commits adultery with her, but his own wife seems to be in love with the strange young woman.

Gripping, mysterious
After watching the movie once or twice, I went looking for the book it was based on-- The Woman Who was Found Adrift-- but there seemed to be no English edition. The film seems to be about plain people enmeshed in a situation rife with symbolism, but it's hard to work out the symbols. Today, tricked too many times by meaningless David Lynch films, we might just assume that there is no underlying message; but the film is a little too old-- and a little too intelligent, I think-- to be a put-on.
