Meet Jim Douglas, a down-on-his-luck race car driver who lives in an old run-down fire house in San Francisco with his friend Tennessee Steinmetz, a occasional drunk mechanic. One day, Jim went to a luxury car dealer and surprisingly seen a strange Volkswagon Beetle with a unusual problem, it tends to drive on it's own almost having its own mind. Then this car drove all the way to Jim's home. Believing that the owner of the car dealership Peter Thorndyke, planted the car on him. Then, Jim wanted to try out the car for himself, then, he experienced the nature of the car for himself. Then, Jim fixed it and now is in more control. Tennessee dubbed the car "Herbie". Then, Jim used Heribe for races. Jim then, was rising to fame and becoming more successful in racing, Then, Thorndyke wants Herbie back, but Jim refuses and Thorndyke wanted to compete against Jim in the races, then Thorndyke sabotaged Herbie before a race so, he can win. then, a big race known as the "El Dorado" was coming up...

Herbie springs to life!

After you've watched The Love Bug, you will notice 2 things:

1) You will not be able to get that infectious calypso tune out of your head for at least a week and will be whistling it everywhere you go!

2) You will want to rush out and hug the nearest VW Beetle! And when you see one, you will no longer just see a car - you will see Herbie! You will see Herbie's personality spring to life right in front of you! You will see the headlamps as eyes and the wing mirrors as ears...

This lovely film is a timeless classic, packed with cute moments, great music, and fantastically funny lines !! Script-wise, it is definitely the best of all the Herbie movies. One criticism I have of the later movies is that I would like to have seen Herbie stay with his original owner Jim Douglas, and follow his adventures with that family rather than see him owned by lots of different people - partly because Jim, Tennessee and Carol are great owners for Herbie, but also because how does the poor little car feel being passed from owner to owner?! If Herbie was mine I would keep him and never sell him!!

a very good movie in the 80's.

I was shocked to see that this movie's rating is so low.

In case you don't know, this movie was super popular when it was played in China during the early 80's. I was still a teenager myself. It left me a good memory. Therefore, I felt the need to give it a 10 and write a comment, since there was only one comment left on this page.

Anyway, back to China, at that time, China didn't have a lot of money to import big Hollywood movies, and the government itself was very strict on which movies were allowed to be imported. So Chinese people had little choices. And at the same time, not many people had TVs at their homes, and there were only a few TV stations in every city. Further, the entertainment industry was only in the early stage. DVD players were not even invented at that time. VCR was probably very expensive, and not many people can afford to buy those tapes, either. So in conclusion, there were not many things people can do for fun.

Movie tickets were cheap at that time, and watching a movie at a movie theater was a big part of people's life, I suppose. Then there came this German movie, it didn't involve any politics, and it was just about an innocent good looking boy with a nice voice who can sing some really beautiful songs. And the story line was not too bad at all.

Unlike the foreign movies played in the US, almost all foreign movies were dubbed in China. So common people can watch the movie easily. The songs were innocent, and not too "capitalist." So those songs were also very popular. Many young kids including myself actually learned how to sing that song "Kleine Kinder, kleine Sorgen" in Chinese. Even today, I still remember how to sing it. And because of that movie, I even searched online for a quite long time, even ordered a CD sang by Heintje all the way from Germany. =) And that is my story about this movie.

Maria Cabral is a one woman show VERY worthwhile seeing.

She has been compared to Monica Vitti, not that their bodies or faces are alike, but because they were two actresses extremely photogenic and of whose faces you can't deviate your eyes for a minute.

The director is obviously in love with this young, boyish, devilish attractive woman. We wonder how he felt when the character of a photographer on location (on one of Lisbon's most scenic gardens) hugs her, and rolls with her under a water shower...

The story is grim - the siege (as the title says in Portuguese) of a young, defenceless woman by all the preying men (and if you're attentive to the innuendos... the women) around her. The film opens with big plans of Maria Cabral's face, and then a thin strip goes geometrically around her, encircling her. I believe that is a piece of film - and the director does encircle his subject, 'Marta', from all possible angles, in all situations you may think of.

Both to recall places, and music of the early 1970s, and not to miss this great (short-lived for the movies) star, you should try to get your eyes on this movie.

Old Fashioned fun

I first watched Paint your wagon at the age of about ten when my dad who incidentally loves this movie had it on in the lounge. At ten years old it is a film that seems to rather drag and seemed so old to me I could barely watch, but now watching it again many years later have come to appreciate it as quite a comic take on the old west. Its characters are amusing and despite some criticism on clint eastwoods performance as partner i enjoy all the actors performances including his. My favourite song of the film would have to be 'no name city' as i remember as a child being amazed at how low the reverends voice goes during that song. Overall I enjoy this movie and will watch it if it is on television. An 9 out of 10. Good old fashioned fun.

Crime drama about Hamburg's prostitution scene

This film about Hamburg's prostitution scene appears rather dated today, although this may have more to do with changed society than with the film being overly unrealistic. The cast is excellent, but perhaps a little too excellent: most speaking parts are cast with well-known German character actors; while they all can handle their parts quite comfortably I watched this constantly thinking "where have I seen this guy before?" and therefore I found it impossible to suspend disbelief. Anyway, a film that features both Horst Frank and Werner Pochath as villains cannot be a complete failure.

A Taste OF EXCITEMENT (Don Sharp, 1970) **1/2

Running virtually concurrently with the Italian Gialli were a handful of violent British thrillers, which often saw a female protagonist at the mercy of some maniac: titles in this cycle included TWISTED NERVE (1968), AND SOON THE DARKNESS (1970), ASSAULT (1971), BLIND TERROR (1971), FRIGHT (1971) and DEADLY STRANGERS (1974) – none of which I have watched at this stage, though I own all of them! The film under review is another one in this vein (and which I opted to check out now in view of the similarity in title to the recently-viewed TASTE OF FEAR 1961 – even if my copy actually sports the lengthy U.S. moniker WHY WOULD ANYONE WANT TO KILL A NICE GIRL LIKE YOU?!), but it differs from the formula in two notable aspects: firstly, there is precious little bloodshed throughout and these are mostly gun-shot wounds (usually, a more inventive weapon comes into play!) and, secondly, it incorporates an espionage subplot which suggests a more obvious link with the typical Hitchcockian suspenser (which, in this case, does not even bother to explain the nature of the "McGuffin", the object contended over by the two sides involved!).

With this in mind, the film is reasonably entertaining along the way, undeniably good-looking (though the full-frame, soft and worn-out VHS-sourced edition I acquired, complete with forced Dutch subtitles, is clearly nothing to write home about...and it is odd that this is still making the rounds when the movie has been available on R2 DVD for some time!) and definitely buoyed by a 'groovy' rock score from Keith Mansfield. Even so, despite co-writer/director Sharp's experience, he seems unsure as to how approach either style: this invariably leads to a general lack of logic (despite breaking into hysterical outbursts every fifteen minutes or so, heroine Eva Renzi is at the same time frequently shown clad in a bikini enjoying the sunshine which the South of France is renowned for!), not to mention a bafflingly tame resolution (though, interestingly, the man – Paul Hubschmid, star of Fritz Lang's "Indian Diptych" 1958-9 and Renzi's real-life spouse – whom the viewer had pinned down all along as the villain is revealed to be only a pawn in the spy game, with the real master criminal proving to be Kay Walsh – from Hitchcock's STAGE FRIGHT 1950 – as a dotty old lady!, only the former is actually eliminated…whereas the latter and her chief thug are merely cornered, and then the scene conveniently cuts away!).

Incidentally, another associate is a psychiatrist but his function is even less clear: since Renzi's Mini Cooper is continually being followed by a white Mercedes, coming twice within an inch of her life on a cliff-edge (the latter sequence emerging as perhaps the film's sole real 'taste of excitement'!), or otherwise nearly driven mad (to this end, even the deafening shriek of a gibbon will do apparently!), how would she then be able to supply her assailants with the vital information they are desperately seeking and which the girl is blatantly unaware of (typically, some agent had slipped her a note on a piece of paper upon feeling that his own days were numbered)! By the way, at the climax, there is a suggestion that Renzi may have been hypnotized to shoot the hero but, once more, the moment is rushed and indifferently handled! Aiding the girl, on the other hand, are a young painter (who, as it happens, is a client of the leading lady's would-be nemesis) played by David Buck, Police Inspector Peter Vaughan and Hammer alumnus Francis Matthews as an agent who gets his pretty quickly. Again, predictably, Buck's brashness more often than not thwarts the good guys' attempts to bring to book the spy ring (such as when he single-handedly saves Renzi from a kidnapping attempt outside a casino).

At the end of the day, it is essentially Renzi's appeal and more-than-fair performance (considering what she had to work with!) that make the film worthwhile; interestingly, that same year she would play a pivotal role in a top Giallo i.e. Dario Argento's striking debut THE BIRD WITH THE CRYSTAL PLUMAGE...

A very popular movie on the medieval persecution of witches (inquisition).

Review :

I liked it more than any other movie about persecution of witches.

I have just seen the movie and I liked it more than any other movie about catholic persecution of witches. The last one I saw (and I think last one made) was The Crucible - that one wasn't bad, but I could not feel as much despair, corruption and that fear to speak up your mind as in this one. Kladivo na Carodejnice - with all the brutality, torture and all that injustice is real and very hard to forget. It is very well played and made. "Kladivo na Carodejnice" is a movie, that definitely catches your attention even when it's nearly 40 years old (not as if it was a bad thing)...that pathetic way in which some movies were made in 60's (I think it is about the lightning in these black&white movies) makes it look so threatening, so dark and sad....and so beautiful.
