The Tavianis clunk up an interesting "Lost" premise

In recent years many brother acts, ranging from the Maysles, Coens, Farrellys, Wheats, Quays and Hugheses to the Pates have been directing movies, but for me the all-time greats are the Taviani Bros. With UNDER THE SIGN OF SCORPIO they lose plenty of brownie points, but I'm welling to write this misfire off. (The only sisters I know of are in the porn field, the cutely named "de Neuve" girls who directed in the mid-'70s.)

Set-up parable is apocalyptic, falling somewhere between the strange sagas associated with Werner Herzog (like "Heart of Glass") to an episode midway during the run of TV's "Lost". An island has been decimated by a volcanic eruption and the few survivors escape to a nearby island. Led by Giulio Brogi, they know that their new home is equally susceptible to such a catastrophe via its own volcano, but they are unable to convince the current inhabitants of Island #2 to flee with them to a mainland.

That is essentially the entire plot for a series of blackout vignettes that are sometimes interesting but often banal or merely pointless. Early in their estimable career the Tavianis are experimenting with the cinematic form and I, for one, was unimpressed with the results.

One of the problems is a disinterest in conventional acting or credible human behavior, much in the manner pioneered around this time by Pasolini. Though top talent is employed (Brogi for one clan, and the brilliant Gian Maria Volonte and Lucia Bose as patriarch and matriarch on Island #2), they are instructed to perform amateurishly. In an effort at forced primitivism, the protagonists' actions oddly come off as much phonier and postured than if Volonte (for example) were giving one of his usual flamboyant, theatrical turns (see: INVESTIGATION OF A CITIZEN for example).

There is plenty of sex and violence in the stew, leading to extremely cryptic sequences later in the film. The barbarian-seeming denizens from Island #1 take to dressing up in cowbells and prancing around all night long in militant stomp fashion to annoy and perplex Island #2 folk, when latter don't take kindly to their insistence that everybody flee the place immediately. (I thought I'd wandered into a recent East Village off-Broadway show at this point.) Later they kidnap most of the women and hogtie them in bondage, cueing brutal violence as Islanders #2 don't take kindly to this action.

Film's open ending is sudden and cryptic, as if the Tavianis were purposely dumping the entire narrative in the viewer's lap instead of attempting to tie up any plot or thematic threads themselves. I shudder to think what fans of similar material (like LORD OF THE FLIES) will think should they have the temerity to sit through this failure, as I had to being a completist. Next up for me (gulp!) is 3-1/2 hours of Laetitia Casta pretending to be an actress rather than a supermodel as the TV star of the Tavianis' LUISA SAN FELICE, crudely dubbed into English no less. Ah, the joys of movie masochism.

It is a bus that has come from hell.

The Golden Age of sexploitation in the late sixties gives us another feature from Something Weird.

This one is towards the end of the era and it shows. There is actually a story here and much more action that would satisfy viewers.

The production values are still really poor, but there is enough to keep your interest.

It concerns a group of hooligans - four males and a female - that break into a house and rape a housewife after giving her heroin. A saleslady comes to the door and they giver her a sugar cube, presumably with acid, and rape her too.

They then steal a bus, kill the driver, and pick up two more women. Lots of action ensues, including rape and a really hot lesbian scene at the end.

This is definitely a film that earns the genre of sexploitation.

His life had been meaningless for the last 29 years, but now, a new challenge awaits him. At first, Antonio is ecstatic. His life has gained new meaning. But soon it becomes obvious that this new Cangaceiro (named Coirana) is no Corisco, but an idealist. An idealist of the sixties in the garb of the forties. A leader to the hopeless and the hungry. Antonio das Mortes begins to reconsider his feelings towards Coirana and his ...

Soporific and dated

I was amazed to see that others have given this movie an average rating of 8.5 out of 10. It's extremely dated, confusing, and quite silly. Some people walked out of it when it showed at the Pacific Film Archive in Berkeley, Calif., USA, recently. And that audience represents the acme of film buffs and connoisseurs --people who can tolerate almost anything.

Spaghetti western that's below average

I had hopes for this movie, given my love of spaghetti westerns and the fact that George Hilton was the star. But at the end, I kind of felt let down. There are some good things here and there - for example, the opening sequence is kind of original, and the climax has some cool touches. But in between that opening and ending, I found the movie kind of boring at times. The basic plot has a number of familiar characters and plot turns, but I could have lived with that had they been treated with energy and displayed in an original manner. But the treatment is kind of strange, with some broad comic touches that don't really fit with the rougher sections, and the story turning to a major detour for a long time after things have been set up. Other problems include that the main villain isn't given enough screen time, not enough action to liven things up, and poor photography. Not the worst spaghetti western I've seen, but even genre fans would be better off not seeking it out.

Review :

Stark Portrait of Hell on Earth

From a story by the author of RASHOMON, this is a dark, stark and very disturbing descent into madness setting a deluded tyrant and an obsessed artist against each other. At first it appears a pretty basic good v. evil take, with the artist refusing to decorate the lord's temple with a portrait of heaven because he sees only hell in the lord's domain - cue a battle of wills between the two, with the artist using his art as his weapon. But it's not that simple: if the lord, who deludes himself of his benevolence, is evil, the artist is little better. He drives out his apprentice for falling in love with his daughter, only to see her become the lord's concubine. Then, as matters escalate and the lord settles for a portrait of hell, knowing the artist can only paint what he sees, to win his daughter's freedom the artist puts others through the pains of hell simply so he can observe and copy their torments. This reaches a tragic climax with a disturbing and powerful scene with a burning carriage with a chained prisoner inside that is the most powerful and visually impressive scene in the picture.

The visuals, as befits a film about art and evil, are often striking. Shot entirely in a studio, there are very effective shifts of light and colour as the characters make their own hells and elements of the supernatural intrude (the film is ultimately a ghost story).

It's not easy to sympathise with any of the characters. The point of the film is that opposing an evil does not necessarily make you good, and that makes for occasionally difficult viewing. But if you're looking for something out of the ordinary and are willing to take a chance on an example of innovative 60's Japanese cinema from outside the samurai/Kurosawa cannon, it's worth exploring. Just don't expect any happy endings.
