Review :

Highly recommended, but only for those who know the history.

This is the story of the great South American hero, General Don Jose de San Martin, one of the three great liberators of the American Colonies from the European empires, next to Washington and Bolivar. The storyline covers near a decade of his life; from the arrival of San Martin to Buenos Aires after his military training in Europe, going through all his historical battles (San Lorenzo, Maipú, Chacabuco), and ends when he encounters General Bolivar, after liberating North Argentina, Chile, and South Peru from the Spanish forces. Almost every historic event is shown, including the crossing of the Andes Mountains -by far the best representation of the whole movie-. This approach of showing everything, causes the movie to be too brief on each event, and explain little or nothing about the causes and motivations of each and every step of San Martin's feat. So, it's essential to have a previous knowledge of this frame of the American history if you intend to understand the film. Otherwise, you'll get dizzied by the somewhat clumsy series of battles and arrivals-at-conquered-cities.

El Santo de la Espada is made by Argentines, and undoubtedly intended for an Argentine public, and the hero is always preceding the man. A more sensitive side of San Martin's personality is also exercised in the various scenes where he is alone with his wife, though this is only half achieved. Some little trivia here: The director's cut originally portrayed San Martin crying while watching soldiers die in one of the battles, but this scene was deleted after censoring from the dictatorial military government of the time, which wouldn't allow any sign of weakness in Argentina's #1 national hero.

Overall, the movie is very well done having in mind the techy limitations of the time where it was done, and specifically, the limitations on Argentine's cinematography. The performances are acceptable in general, and Alfredo Alcon's is definitely outstanding: he will make you firmly believe that he is the San Martin you've studied about in school.

Pleasant little comedy

This is a neat little comedy about a man who has survived in a frozen state for more than half a century. When he wakes up (not having aged at all) all his surroundings have been adapted to make him believe he is still living in his own time. Of course, this charade cannot be maintained for very long.

This is a pleasant little comedy, giving people a nice excuse to wear colourful old-fashioned clothes, without necessarily behaving the way the clothes and the decor would indicate. The film has its weaknesses, in particular it is difficult to see why the scientists go through all the trouble. Worse, Olivier de Funes (who plays it straight) lacks the required charisma to carry the film, and we don't get quite enough action from his famous father.

Stunning fidelity to the life, sound and look of the composer.

Starring the remarkable Innokenti Smoktunovsky in the title role, this film is completely unlike the Ken Russell debacle 'The Music Lovers.' Talankin's film is absolutely breathtaking in its fidelity to the story of the composer's life as I know it from numerous sources. The resemblance of Smoktunovsky to Tchaikovsky is striking and it's very easy to suspend disbelief and imagine one is watching the composer himself -- and in color!

The film doesn't try to go far afield from simply telling the facts of the composer's life, but then it really doesn't have to: the true story is vastly interesting. Brought to life splendidly are Nadejda von Meck, the Rubinsteins, Hermann Laroche -- all those characters familiar from the musical life of Russia in the late 19th century. Executive Producer Dmitri Tiomkin returned to Russia to arrange and conduct the soundtrack before such cultural exchanges became commonplace. Tiomkin's work with Tchaikovsky's music is respectful and also highly creative at the same time. While 'Tchaikovsky' is certainly not as fanciful as Hollywood or Ken Russell it's all the more rewarding for it.

Sir Edward Markham is the victim of a voodoo curse which has caused his face to become horribly disfigured. He is kept captive in the attic of his house by his brother Julian. Sir Edward escapes, moves in with an unscrupulous doctor who hires grave robbers to steal bodies for his research, wears a red hood over his face, and kills a good number of townspeople before the surprise ending.

"I'll only do my prowling at night."

Disfigured in an African ritual, Edward is kept, "protected", by his brother Julian by being kept chained up in attic. He fakes his death to escape from Julian and another man is killed to take Edward's place in the "oblong box". Film looks like a low-key, photographed stageplay, a well-dressed period piece having little to do with Poe's short story, besides the title box. This is one of those films to watch primarily to enjoy the cast, lush settings and photography, hooded killers, throat-slicings, and a couple of good scares along the way, even if it has little if anything to do with Poe, just don't get one's hopes too high up. It does have a good unmasking scene, and genuinely creepy twist-ending, which still stood out in my mind years after I had last seen this film.

Favourite line: "I'll only do my prowling at night."

Sushi Sci-Fi with an American Twist

As was the norm in the 60's, Japanese filmmakers used old-time American actors to help market their films in the US and Europe. Such Hollywood classics such as Raymond Burr ("Godzilla"), Nick Adams and Robert Horton ("The Green Slime") made a second career by appearing in Japanese sci -fi.

Joseph Cotton ("Citizen Kane"), Cesar Romero (TV "Batman's" original Joker) and Richard Jaeckel ("The Dirty Dozen", "Spenser:For Hire", "The Green Slime"), were another three who appeared in this offbeat blend of sci-fi and fantasy.

Cotten has his hands full as a Captain Nemo-esque commander of the super sub Alpha (an odd coincidence, since he later played the famous submariner in MGM's "Captain Nemo and the Underwater City"), fighting against a mad scientist (Romero) with a penchant for splicing together mutant creatures to rule the world. Jaeckel plays the reporter tossed into this crazy conflict, which has little or no plot or character development, but is just your average no-brainer popcorn flick perfect for the fanboy in all of us.

A strange twist was the marketing of this film as a sequel to the live action version of the anime movie "Atragon", another super sub movie that bears absolutely no resemblance in design or plot to "Latitude Zero".

Review :

amateurish and lame

this movie sucked. it's got a halfassed scenario which seems to be invented solely for the purposes of a young man (RWF) to make himself look cool and show a chick's tits.

The scenery is bleak and the dialogue dull/forced. The whole time the three main characters constantly try to act cool, in a very dated way. There is occasional action, and it is staged very poorly. Gunshots/punching sounds are never timed right, and one scene even fully shows a guy getting shot, without any puncturing or bleeding. He just wiggles around to the soundtrack of gun noises.

You could say "the pacing is slow", but that would be an understatement. Often there is nothing going on for several minutes... one scene in particular presents RWF and co. walking down a road, smoking, not saying anything, for 3 minutes. Lots of stuff like this. These guys clearly didn't know what they were doing. Extremely unprofessional... I wonder how many of his early films are just him and his friends running around, being boring?

If you're a hardcore Fassbinder fan, i guess it might give you a kick to see his painful first efforts. I would stick to later, more figured-out stuff, or the enjoyable first 2 short films.
