In Victorian London, the British Government attempts a solution to the problem of prostitution by establishing the world's most fabulous brothel.

Review :

A two-joke film, and neither of them are funny

After his role in Antonioni's "Blow-Up" in 1966, David Hemmings was regarded, together with Michael Caine, Alan Bates and Terence Stamp, as one of the rising young male stars of the British cinema. He never, however, seemed to live up to his early promise, and "The Best House in London", made only three years later, perhaps represents an early stage in the decline of his career.

The film is a comedy about a proposal to set up a government-sponsored brothel in Victorian London and the resistance to that proposal led by Lady Josephine Pacefoot, an anti-prostitution campaigner. Hemmings plays two characters, Walter Leybourne, the instigator of the scheme, and Benjamin Oakes, an idealistic young journalist who gets involved in Lady Josephine's campaign. The physical similarity between the two men is explained when they turn out to be long-lost half-brothers; both (implausibly, given Hemmings's blond looks) are illegitimate sons of the Chinese Ambassador.

The film is some time during the reign of Queen Victoria, although it is impossible to be more precise than that. The fact that Elizabeth Barrett and Robert Browning are courting but not yet married would suggest that the action takes place around 1845. (They married in 1846). The presence of Oscar Wilde and Lord Alfred Douglas, who first met in 1891, coupled with references to Jack the Ripper (1888) and the Eiffel Tower (1889), would however suggest a date nearly fifty years later. The writer Denis Norden stuffed the script with references to events such as the Opium Wars and the Indian Mutiny and there are walk-on appearances by various other Victorian celebrities, such as Dickens and Tennyson. Norden seems to have deliberately ignored the fact that, as Victoria ruled for over sixty years, many people whom we think of as "Victorians" were far from exact contemporaries of one another.

I was surprised to see reviews on this board comparing the film to Monty Python, as it seems to me to have little to do with the Pythonesque or Goonish tradition of surreal humour, despite the presence of a pre-Python John Cleese in a minor role. Rather, it derives from a quite different strand of British humour, the bawdy tradition of the "Carry On" films. This tradition was already strong in the late sixties, and was to become the dominant one in the British cinema (although fortunately not on television) during the seventies. The film has also been described as satirical, although it contains little satire worthy of the name; it is hardly cutting-edge humour to satirise the ways of a hundred years ago. As for the suggestion that Josephine Pacefoot is a satirical portrait of Dame Josephine Butler, I cannot for the life of me see why Norden might have wanted to satirise someone who had been dead for more than sixty years when the film was made and who the great majority of his audience would never have heard of.

What the film does contain is a good deal of semi-nudity and innuendo-laden humour. Most sixties sex comedies today seem about as offensive as a seaside postcard, and a lot of the material in "The Best House in London" today seems bland and harmless, if not particularly funny. Nevertheless, some scenes actually seem worse today than they probably did forty years ago. At one point we hear a suggestive song about "my pussy". Had this song been performed by an adult woman, it would today provoke nothing more than a sigh of "Oh no! Not that old joke again!" (Even in the sixties jokes playing on the fact that the same word can mean both "cat" and "vagina" must have seemed pretty corny). As, however, it is sung by a young child, it comes across today as an unpleasant, even sinister, piece of humour.

Although the film does not tell us much about the age in which it is ostensibly set, it does perhaps inadvertently tell us something about the age in which it was made. It is essentially a two-joke film. The first joke is that, behind a mask of piety and respectability, Victorian men were in fact all incredibly randy. The second joke is that Victorian women were mostly at heart prostitutes; the saintly Lady Josephine's endeavours to save women from a life of degradation are constantly thwarted by the fact that they do not want to be saved and would much prefer to continue to prostitute themselves.

The first of these jokes is perhaps based upon a half-truth; social disapproval of vice and prostitution has never, in the Victorian age or any other, prevented it from flourishing. Behind the laughter, however, one can detect the uneasiness which the advocates of sixties permissiveness felt about Victorian values; the film never tackles nineteenth-century objections to prostitution head on but evades them by suggesting that they were never anything more than a hypocritical façade. As for the second joke, that is surely rooted in some very strange and distorted attitudes towards women. The wonder is that forty years ago such attitudes were put forward as being somehow progressive. Neither joke ever succeeds in raising many laughs. 4/10

Has someone killed Kurrat and plunged his body into the near sea? When Stallmann, a teacher with whom Kurrat was rumored to have had an affair, and Kurrat's father are found dead, the mystery grows. Joachim Fuchsberger and Horst Tappert lead the search for a killer

"School of Fear" aka "Seven Days of Grace" is a well-mounted murder mystery that misses no opportunity to provide a rich portrait that lays bare every aspect of a boarding school. It brings out the boys attending, their teachers, the headmaster, and the custodian and his wife who maintain the facilities.

At the halfway mark, a police inspector Horst Tappert arrives from out of town. He's looking for Kurrat (senior) who has disappeared. Not so coincidentally, the staff, led by Joachim Fuchsberger, have been hunting for Kurrat (junior), a student who also has gone missing. They didn't call in the police in order not to scandalize this upper tier private boarding school.

The director, Albert Vohrer, had by this time directed a number of the Edgar Wallace krimis. This movie has a serious tone overall, but it also has definite strains of cynical humor and biting commentary that lard it too.

I watched a decent but apparently unrestored widescreen print of this movie with good subtitles. It ran 96 minutes and some seconds. The credits had the names of the production team and cast spelled correctly, so it was not the print viewed by the only other reviewer at present.

One chase scene occurs that is quite memorable, on foot. It takes us over snow-covered shores of a body of water.

The movie begins in a light way with the pranks of the boys who sneak out at night for fun and games at the apartment of a local prostitute. They also confront their teachers and eventually we hear their satires recorded on a tape. This establishes the conflict between the new generation and the older stuffier one. The boys also harass each other.

One teacher named Fromm (Konrad Georg) loses his temper with the younger Kurrat and has to apologize when the elder Kurrat interferes. He later reconciles with the boy. The custodian is taking money from the boys to let them in and out at night. His wife is unhappy with his subservient role and spies on the boys taking a shower. The headmaster is anxious to maintain the school's reputation. One teacher is gay and he comes in for some ridicule from the boys, but the younger Kurrat seems to turn to him for counsel. Fuchsberger is courting a female teacher and they are satirized by the boys.

Gradually the picture grows more serious with the disappearances and then we are confronted with several deaths.

Overall, a decent mystery and social portrait that survives its time.

Review :

Cold summer

I had some idea that this was a Marguerite Duras version of Last Year in Marienbad early on in the film. After all the characters we see are in an existential limbo, a comfort zone, staying in a hotel in the countryside that seems to be outside things somehow. There is the Marienbad feel initially that the characters need to break out by a supreme effort, that they need to have the will to love. They are perhaps Beckettian slouches, avoiding the local forest although they constantly resolve to go there; why go into the forest when we can stay in the park they reason. There definitely is that going on but I think so much more as well.

Further into the film you can start to feel similarities to David Cronenberg's wonderful early movie Stereo (incidentally released in the same year). In that movie volunteers in a blank deserted modernist university have brain surgery to remove their ability to speak but increase their power for telepathy. Some characters in the experiment are dominant and control the others, some resist the melding, but a group identity is formed, hideously psychosexual. In this movie you feel that the inhabitants of the hotel are undergoing the same process. Stein is the master, Alissa his Stradivarius, Elisabeth a psychological weakling, becoming a golem, Max Thor Stein's henchman. At one point Elisabeth's husband arrives and all four of the main characters refer to themselves as German Jews, Stein is in them all. Amongst many merging references is the beautiful line that Stein delivers on the subject of Max and Alissa sleeping together every night, "one day they'll find the two of you shapeless, clotted like tar" The location to go into more detail is a hotel absent of staff, absent of the outside. There is a beautiful grove outside where white sun-loungers are thinly spaced out on the daisy-strewn grass, where white cast-iron chairs with backs made of symmetrical curlicues poise. Max and Stein have a conversation at the start of the movie, "What season is it?" "Cold Summer". That sums up the feel of the place. Another point is that there are no children, this is actually reminiscent of another masterpiece Jens Lien's 2006 movie The Bothersome Man, where the lack is the difference between a world with flavour and no flavour.

After a while the movie becomes very stylised, the shots are static and really close up, the scenes conversational. It took me a little while to realise that what's going on is that I was becoming a hotel resident, being enveloped by the scenes, joining the group. The effect is quite overpowering, I felt like reaching out and touching Max's blazer, like kissing Alissa (I have never felt that way in a movie). During a card game I actually felt like I was holding a hand.

Alissa (Nicole Hiss) is so strange, described as having the hair of a child, with a bearing both uncertain and yet sure at the same time, like a Delphic Pythoness. A tactile women who in a key scene has parted lips through which no words emit.

The ending has more than a hint of Maya Deren's Meshes of the Afternoon (1943). It is no coincidence that this film raises the spectre of so many others brilliant ones.

To keep the mood going after the film is over I recommend playing Charles Ives' "The Unanswered Question".

This played to a very sparse audience at the Institut Francais' Cine Lumiere in London on 25 October 2010.

This looks like something made in 1933. Its hard to believe its from 1969, what with the colors, the tracking and the sound quality. The color looks like old two-strip Technicolor, but worse than that. I have seen many two-strip Technicolor films and they look better than this crap. Buy this film, and try to look for a copy of The Black Pirate, Whoopee or Hollywood Revue and compare it, and you'll see what I mean.

a robber hides out with a family

"Devil by the Tail" is a 1969 French film directed by Phillipe de Broca, starring Yves Montand, Madeleine Renaud, Maria Schell, and Marthe Keller.

A family that has fallen on hard times runs a hotel which has one permanent weekend guest and little else in between. In the opening scene, coffee cups are being placed strategically in the attic to catch water leakage during the rain.

The family consists of an elegant older woman, la marquise (Renaud), her flirtatious married daughter (Schell), la comtesse Diane, her husband, le comte George ( Jean Rochefort) and their beautiful, leggy daughter le jeune baronne Amelie (Keller). Amelie has a some time boyfriend, Charles, who works at a local garage, who occasionally gets the hotel guests by disabling their cars when they stop for gas.

When Charles disables the car of a group of gangsters who have just stolen 100,000 francs, the three reluctantly check in at the hotel and put the money in the wall safe. The head man, Cesar (Yves Montand) charms the women. After a visit from the police, the family realizes who their guests are -- in one hilarious scene, unaware that Cesar has left with the money, they try to break into the safe from the back. The three men leave, but two are killed when their car gets into an accident and goes into the water. Cesar makes his way back to the hotel to hide out.

Absolutely delightful film that could be made today. It's not dated at all and manages to be sexy, warm, and funny all at the same time. Marthe Keller is so fresh and young, and her long, gorgeous legs are shown throughout the film. Maria Schell is unabashedly playful and romantic, though she loves her husband. Renaud, a stunning older woman, is no-nonsense and practical throughout. And the star, Montand, is the essence of French smoothness and charm as he captivates the family.

Highly recommended, with wonderful direction, acting, music, and scenery. It will leave you with a smile on your face!

Bill and the black widow

Sybille, the honorable wife of a banker, has her husband murdered and blames saloon girl Shanda for the deed, thus Shanda gets almost killed by three rogues, but her life is saved by Will Hunter. Will goes to town in the disguise of a professional gambler, Bill Abilene, to investigate the murder case, find the three rogues and avenge the abuse of Shanda.

This is a rather unusual Italian western. Talkative, with lots of women, most scenes shot indoors at the studio, it doesn't have the typical atmosphere, if you know what I mean: silent stranger riding across the desert and so on. It is probably telling a lot that the director didn't shoot much else in the western area except a Zorro movie.

Edwige Fenech's name is big on the DVD cover because she became a star later, but she is only no.3 among the female cast. Slovenian actress Spela Rozin plays the part of Shanda, providing red hair and blue eyes with great effect, and then there is Sybille, the black widow, played by Daniela Surina as a temptress without remorse. Not a great movie, but an interesting one, off the beaten path.

A waste of time only if you're looking just for a cheap skin flick

This is an film which is based on the book "Philosophy in the Boudoir" by the Marquis de Sade. Originally written in 1795, it is perhaps the most representative of all the Marquis de Sade's works. The script very cleverly adapts the original story for the modern time (that is 1970). Dialog is brilliant (Christopher Lee is mostly reading the original text by de Sade). Music is excellent. Acting is superb by all actors, most notably Maria Rohm, Jack Taylor and Christopher Lee. Marie Liljedahl is very convincing as the innocent young girl (she was just 19 while shooting). I don't like the idea to have an even younger actress for the part (like some other comment here seems to advise)! The cinematography fascinatingly uses the space on screen in focusing (and sometimes not focusing) different aspects of the image. But I must admit that this technique works much better on the big screen. Luckily I had the possibility the see this amazing piece of art in a theatrical screening. The film is highly recommended if you like the work of Luis Bunuel, Orson Welles, Douglas Sirk, Roman Polanski, Perdo Almodovar or David Lynch.

That all said, avoid the film if your just looking for a cheap skin flick. You won't find it here. Go to your next videostore and rent something else: "If you want to watch porn, then buy the real thing" (like one other reviewer said). This one has absolutely nothing to do with porn. If you never heard of de Sade and if you have no interest in art and an experimental approach of film-making, you will find this film boring, stupid and you won't understand what's it about.

The BEST Italian Spaghetti-Style War Movie

One of the finest Italian war films, directed by the famed producer Mino Loy.

Captain Bradbury (George Hilton) is assigned to lay mines to stop a German advance. His squad is made up of a crazed Canadian ex-con (Frank Wolff), a motorbiker (Rik Battaglia), and a young lover-boy (Fabrizio Moroni). They band together with survivors from a German tank (Robert Hossein and Ivano Staccioli) who have badly needed water.

Okay. With the stage set, not much more has to be said. The film is basically one long trek across the desert, focusing on the characters and their emotions and personalities. While most war films of the era rely on big spectacle and action, here the producers rely on acting talent for success. The tension between these guys feels real, as the water and petrol run low and the sun becomes intensely hotter.

Bruno Nicolai's memorable music score is haunting and fits the mood perfectly. Zanni's breathtaking photography captures the bleak desert with amazing authenticity, adding a degree of realism rarely seen in Italian war films of the time.

While George Hilton (THE BATTLE OF EL ALAMEIN) does a fine job as a stiff British officer, it's really Frank Wolff (A STRANGER IN TOWN) who steals the show. He's a crazed Canadian ex-thief who goes madder and madder until he meets his climactic fate. The rest of the cast all do a great job, especially Moroni as a fatally wounded grunt who is constantly flashing back to his pregnant wife back home. Staccioli (COMMANDOS) is also very good as a loyalist Nazi NCO, and Rik Battaglia (BATTLE FORCE) is decent in a small role as the one who goes along with the crowd. Goffredo Unger (THIRTY SIX HOURS TO HELL) is great as a burly, short-tempered career soldier. Loy uses the flashback technique again and again to paint his characters, and these scenes are appropriately edited either very choppily or very fluidly, depending on the intensity of what's going on in the present. Throw in some big tank battles near and the end and a slam-bang antiwar ending, and you've got a fine little film.

I saw this on an old Interglobal Home Video. I had no idea this existed existed on video and was quite surprised when a contact was able to send me a copy. The film is titled DESERT ASSAULT and not the common title, DESERT BATTLE. The original credits have apparently been removed, and this print has cheap video-generated credits about 10 minutes into the film. It's presented full frame which is occasionally annoying, cutting both speakers out of frame in some scenes. The colors are pretty accurate and there is not too much print damage. FIND THIS ONE TODAY!

Also of note: Lenzi uses a good deal of the tank battle footage for his later epic BATTLE FORCE.

It's not often that I come across a gem like this. Definitely a must-see.

could come true

Marco Ferreri's surreal film "Il seme dell'uomo" ("The Seed of Man" in English) looks more plausible today than it probably did when it first came out. The movie portrays a young man and woman who, after learning of a plague ravaging the populace, take refuge in a house on the coast and turn it into a miniature museum displaying cultural relics from the days before the plague. But that's not the end...

An interesting point is that the movie never identifies what the plague in question is specifically. It could be any scourge. Certainly plenty of bad things have afflicted the planet recently - the combination of global warming and the financial crisis constitutes a perfect storm - to the point that the events portrayed in this movie look as though they could come true. I bet that Marco Ferreri never realized what a prescient movie he was making!

So, I recommend this. Not just as a warning about what the world could turn into, but as a look at Italy's changing cinema in the late '60s (in which Ferreri played a major role). Definitely worth seeing.

Apparently Dracula was a horny Jewish guy.

I haven't seen this film in awhile, but remember it pretty vividly. The film was obviously shot on a really low budget and without any real actors. It has a kind of "Manos" feel to it, but with nudity and even worse special effects. There are bats that are obviously on wires and some pretty cheesy costumes. The guy doing Dracula's voice sounds like an old Jewish man (I don't know where the hell they got the idea to make Dracula Jewish, considering he was Transylvanian). The only thing that I liked about this movie is that it didn't take itself seriously at all.

Count Dracula is living in an abandoned mine in the middle of nowhere. He invites a local reporter to visit him (he goes under the pseudonym of Alucard, hee hee hee, like nobody's ever heard that before). When the inept reporter gets there, Dracula turns him into a pretty crappy looking wolf man, named Irving Jackelmann (enough with the Jewish jokes already). Dracula then sends him out to catch beautiful girls for him to tie up, love up and drain dry. Dracula takes a hankering for the reporter's girl friend and ends up chasing her around his cave.

The opening ten minutes have some really awful stream of consciousness speech by the reporter involving the blue mountains, behind the blue mountains, behind the blue mountains (we get it already). Dracula's accent is just plain annoying. Irving Jackelmann also proves to be pretty bad. The chase scene, for the love of God, was only a nude woman running around the same set for an excruciatingly long time. The nudity can't save it and the jokes, although trying hard to be campy, are just plain dumb.

Avoid unless you can spare a few brain cells.

Tiger, tiger, burning bright in the forest desert island of the night

Strange one this, not quite sure how a tiger would end up on a deserted island in the middle of the ocean. But that is only a minor part of the story, the tiger chases the marooned Crusoe for a while until he traps it and sort of tames it,well,he has it on a long rope or tied up most of the time!

Most of the film deals with the standard Crusoe legend, stranded he makes the best of a bad lot, builds a home, finds food and fends for himself, all the while battling the loneliness. Very nicely filmed, even on video tape,it looks sharp and colourful but it's hard to make a film around just the one character with narration taking the place of conversation. It's well towards the end of the story before the cannibals turn up in their boats to feast on their victims on the island. At first,Crusoe hides but finally has to make a stand to save a young boy from been the next main course on the menu. Here's where it hits into current sensibilities,it's a bit unsettling to see the young boy run about naked with a grown adult, although,Crusoe makes him some pants to wear later and been taught to talk by Crusoe with his 'you,Friday,' 'me,master,' dialogue. It looks slightly disturbing but then that is how it would have been in that era,of course.

Just as the two begin to bond, the film abruptly ends! I was expecting a final battle with the returning cannibals but it never happens. We are told by voice-over that the two are rescued but eventually return to their island home.

Not a bad movie, nothing new and the black and white series,'The Adventures of Robinson Crusoe,' from 1964 which was a staple part of BBC children's programming in the late sixties is still the best, especially with it's haunting and evocative theme tune.

Trying to make a bad film sound good

With more than it's fair share of wooden acting 'Che!' seems doomed from the word go.

Omar Shariff attempts to breathe life into his overtly asthmatic portrayal of the revolutionary icon, Ernesto Che Guevaro, but is held back by the sheer lack of factual references. Jack Palance portrays Fidel Castro, in a manner that could almost have been written by the US government, as a man not able to fully think things through for himself. The film portrays the July 26th movement as an inept band of unwashed desperados who want to take over Cuba, but with only sheer luck, & government ineptitude, helping them to ultimately win through.

Covering the period of time from Che's first arrival on Cuban soil in 1956 until his Bolivian death in 1967, 'Che!' struggles with both poor screenplay and locations, but still trys to maintain a sense of purpose throughout. It could have been so much better. The political oppression that led to the overthrow of the Batista regime is totally glossed over & the rebels life, in the Sierra Madre, is portrayed as almost luxurious with Batista's troops wandering around waiting to be shot. Constant monologues, as a means to link scenes, prove to be more irritating than useful, and you find yourself wishing for the what little action there is to resume.

The film truly dies when Guevara leaves Cuba for Bolivia, with Shariff becoming more asthmatic and psychotic by the minute, until his ultimate capture in the mountains and his eventual murder in the backroom of La Higuera's village schoolhouse.

Any half decent film director would probably relish the chance to make a bio-pic of the legend that is Che Guevara. Che is an icon who deserves to have a film biography worthy of his legend, in the same manner of the bio-pics of Chaplin, Gandhi, Biko, Morrison etc.

Old-fashioned spy entry to be avoided

Here's one that tries to be cynical and hip but fails on both accounts. Director Peter Graham Scott was involved with both the Danger Man and The Avengers television series' but drops the ball here, churning out a staid but not altogether lifeless espionage non-thriller.

'Scuse me...while I kill this guy...

I can't explain my adoration for this film. I initially saw it sometime in the mid-80's and it was love at first sight. Perhaps it's because it reminds me of Hershell Gordon Lewis with less gore and (somewhat) better acting? Who knows and who cares?! Hot tunes, bad hair, and acid-washed brains make for good times. SCREAM, BABY, SCREAM is a riot and I highly recommend it for anyone who enjoys those preposterous '60's tripped-out monster movies (you know who you are). For a double dose of groovy gory fun, track down a copy of BLOOD FREAK and you'll never be the same.
