Review :

You could do better, but you could do worse too. . .

In 1971 notorious Italian director Pier Paolo Pasolini released his film "The Decameron" which ushered in the Italian "decamerotici" films, a series of ribald period sex comedies. It's interesting though that even before Pasolin's seminal film, the Germans were are already busy churning out their own period sex comedies like the "Sexy Susan" series and "The Blonde and the Black Pussycat". These films are set in a bit later times than the "decamerotici" (the German golden age of the 18th and 19th century as opposed to the Italian golden age of the 15th and 16th century) and are distinctly Barvarian flavored. They do, however, have a lot of the same actresses that later appeared in Italian "decamerotici" and other Italian exploitation genres--Rosalba Neri, Lucretia Love, Daniela Giordano, and perhaps most famously Edwige Fenech. who really got her start in these German films before becoming the reigning queen of 70's Italian exploitation.

The story here involves a wealthy but unmarried couple (which seems pretty unlikely in the 19th century)who host a wine-making party for their assorted friends. There is a promiscuous young woman "Arabella", who constantly cuckolds her older husband with both men and women. There is a bickering couple with a handsome husband who constantly cheats on his wife (even though his wife is played by a twenty-year-old Edwige Fenech). There is the typical saucy maid who fools around with the head servant. And rounding out the group is the virginal but sexually curious contessa niece of the host. What does any of this have to do with French author Honore de Balzac, you ask? Well, the women all enjoy reading racy passages from Balzac, but otherwise the works of the great author are pretty irrelevant.

These films rarely work as comedies, and they probably weren't much better even BEFORE they were badly dubbed into English. But this film isn't as horridly dubbed as usual and at least isn't trying too hard to be funny, so it's less stupid than some of its ilk. (Although there is one not-very-subtle scene where the uncle lectures his niece on the birds and the bees while he just happens to be straddling a large cannon). This film isn't necessarily as sexy as it could be though either. It is a tradition of these films to use more busty, voluptuous women, (especially compared to Germany's more famous sexploitation series, the "Schulmadchen-Report" films, which tended to use "barely legal" actresses with slender adolescent bodies). Two of the actresses here though are pretty seriously pushing overweight status, and moreover, they are often filmed from pretty unflattering angles during their sex scenes so you can see lots of goose-flesh and cellulite (it's also possible, however, that these shots are actually inserts added by the American distributors to "spice up" the product). Fenech looks great as ever though, voluptuous enough to play a character much older than she was at the time, but without an inch of unappealing cellulite on her. The actress playing the niece is also very cute, but stays (mostly) dressed. The best scene is where all four main actresses are sunbathing nude while reading Balzac and a thief steals their horses, so three of them give chase without, of course, put any of their clothes back on. . .

Obviously, this is very stupid and it lacks a lot of the clever satire and literary gravitas of Pasolini's "The Decameron" or the better Italian "decamerotici". But it's also better than most of your 60's-era "nudie-cuties" or anything that passes as non-hardcore sexploitation today. You could do better I'm sure, but you could worse too. . .

This movie made me love John Wayne.

This movie came out when I was just a wee gal. My grandfather was a big western fan, so I am sure I saw it at his house in between episodes of Gunsmoke. I don't remember the first time I saw it, but I remember how I came to love John Wayne. When he died in the late 70s I was crushed. I still watch this movie at least once a year, (it is on TNT or some other Turner channel at least monthly). Rooster Cogburn is, to me, the archetype of all Western heroes. He is the undeniably flawed, crochety old man that hides his tenderness behind a facade of toughness. He roams all over the west in search of bad guys, and he drinks to fill the hole inside him that loneliness has created. It is important to say that he is not a killer, or interested in revenge. His whole being, his soul, rests on the cause of justice. He is the bravest character ever created in a writer's imagination. At the end, when he jumps his horse over the fence and tells Maddie to come and see an old fat man sometime, I cry. Everytime. Despite his politics, and the fact that he was just an actor, to me John Wayne is the lone western hero that will remain in my heart for all my life.

Review :

A piece of dinosaur doo-doo from master of crappy movies, Ed Wood

Back by popular demand, "Matthew Rants". Boy, did this movie made me want to rant. It is just an hour and twenty minutes of pure sex and orgies and not enough monsters. I mean the monsters don't get enough screen time. I know that this film contains scenes from "One Million B.C" (1940), but they don't get enough screen time. Now the film's plot is hard to follow because all the scenes are taken up by all the sex with these skinny women. It is about the day in the life of primeval times where man must fight this one T-Rex, where the characteristics change from a plastic toy to a cheesy puppet that was used in "The Mighty Gorga". Speaking of gorilla's, a woman gets raped by an ape. If the that stuff can be released on DVD, then why not "Ingagi" (1930). In a nutshell, I can describe this movies as follows: Crap crap crap crap. Wow, they spoke profanity back then? Crap crap crap. Whoa monsters! Crap crap crap crap crap. That was random. Crap. Yeah the F-word, the three lettered A-word and the four lettered H-word is spoken. The film's plot is a far cry from "One Million B.C."

Bottom line: This is a complete waste of time. A complete wast of money. A complete waste of talent and a complete waste of celluloid.

Rated NC-17 for constant sex.

This has been another "Matthew Rants".

" Don't wait for me. I'll be here for one hundred years "

Every prison throughout the world, whether state or Federal is an enclosed pressure cooker capped by an ever tightening lid of anger, hate and frustration. Within the walls are a collection of unruly, unpredictable, undisciplined gathering of misfits, murderers and anti-social types. For the most part they are watched and guarded so they do not escape their confinement which is the location for the film called " Riot. " Jim Brown stars as Cully Briston with Gene Hackman as Red Fraker. Although, Cully is to be released in a couple of months, 'Red' and his fellow inmates stage a small takeover in the infirmary which spills over to the detention ward. Having little to do with the initial incident, Cully nevertheless becomes part of the escalating situation when he helps his friends. Gerald O'Loughlin, plays one of the more contentious prison guards who has been throwing his weight around for years in the prison, suddenly feigns sickly and fragile in the face of death. Meanwhile, the Warden who has been vacationing, returns and orders the prisoners to cease and desist. As he prepares to send in his Riot-Squads, the prisoners plan on escaping with an Indian guide called Surefoot. (Ben Carruthers) The seconds tick away and the situation becomes hopelessly unmanageable. The Warden, the Guards and the prisoners all await the next turn of events. Strong character drama from Brown, Hackman and Mike Kellin give this feature a realistic aura and one sure to make high drama for the audience. Good Film and one of the best performances for Jim Brown. ****

The Learning Tree was a good movie and book let;s remember, Gordon Parks was a black man trying to do his own thing at a time when it was hard for black directors

I think Gordon Parks, did a very good job. I saw the Learning Tree as a child, read it as a child and was happy to see it again as an adult, I even gave my son the book. I applaud Gordon Parks for trying perhaps if he had help (not necessarily someone else total directing it could have flowed a little better). I would love to see this film remade, but who could do it, without deviating from the premise and who could capture the cinematography the way Mr. Parks did. Let me know and maybe we could petition Hollywood. There are a lot of talented black directors who probably could remake the movie but would they be interested???. Spike Lee maybe, John Singelton, the Hudlin brothers??? With the way movies (remakes that is) are being made nowadays, I would love to see a high quality remake. The movie would also need high quality actors. I am going to purchase the movie on DVD and watch it again. Well anyway, I respect your opinion and would like to some feedback on my opinion.

Jeff is nowhere to be seen.

Many people at the time thought that Delon played "Jeff" (the posters were deceptive);he actually plays Laurent ,a young gangster who, after a holdup,is searching for his boss who has left the gang and of course has taken all the dough. The runaway's lover,Eva accompanies him.

This is a moderately entertaining detective film.It was not the first time Delon had worked with Jean Herman. The previous year, they had made a better thriller "Adieu L'Ami" also starring Charles Bronson. Here,Delon played opposite Mireille Darc who was his girlfriend at the time .But the best is once again,François de Roubaix's tuneful delicate score.

The Illustrated Man is classic Bradbury, a collection of eighteen startling visions of humankind's destiny, unfolding across a canvas of decorated skin, visions as keen as the tattooist's needle and as colorful as the inks that indelibly stain the body. The images, ideas, sounds and scents that abound in this phantasmagoric sideshow are provocative and powerful: the mournful cries of celestial travelers cast out cruelly into a vast space of stars and blackness, the sight of gray dust settling over a forgotten outpost on a road that leads nowhere, the pungent odor of Jupiter on a returning father's clothing. Here living cities take their vengeance, technology awakens the most primal natural instincts, Martian invasions are foiled by the good life and the glad hand, and dreams are carried aloft in junkyard rockets.

Review :

Dated, but the core still shines bright.

'The Illustrated Man' shows how good a writer Ray Bradbury was, not to mention how his head was full of fascinating ideas. It shows this because the film is incredibly dated today, from the acting styles to the visions of the future we witness. And yet I remained engrossed throughout, because beneath the anachronisms and barmy notions lie the same powerful film that resonated with me as a child.

A lot of the film has little to do with the title character, although Rod Steiger's menacing performance will never let you forget the man with all-over body tattoos that come to life if you stare too hard. Also, Steiger himself has multiple roles throughout, and he delivers them with a mix of the theatrical bellow and long-faced stoicism of the period, but they still have their impact. Meanwhile of greater interest are the short stories each tattoo reveals. Like Bradbury's 'The Martian Chronicles', this film is a collection of tales woven around a central premise. We view his fears about where human society is heading, thanks to the all-pervading intrusion of technology into our lives.

I'm reminded of a Poe line - "without music or an intriguing idea, colour becomes pallor, man becomes carcass, home becomes catacomb, and the dead are but for a moment motionless". What becomes of the human soul when the machines take over? Add the all-embracing pallor and single-chrome fashion of a typical 1960s vision of the future, and you have a very bleak picture indeed. Yet that's how people saw things then (our guesses on things to come will look just as ridiculous soon enough), and the central theme, given how far we've progressed technologically in the interim, cannot be any less relevant. I'm glad our modern perspective yearns for more colour though - never mind technology killing our souls - the achromatic architecture would make anyone suicidal enough already.

Sojourns into futurity do of course suggest sci-fi trappings. Even putting aside the fact that predictions of the future quickly become dated, Ray Bradbury was never scientifically accurate at the time he wrote his stories. In 'The Martian Chronicles' for example, it is possible to breathe on Mars, water flows through canals, and a few blasts from a rocket's engines can terraform the atmosphere. 'The Illustrated Man' takes the same liberties with reality. Yet to dismiss it because of nonsensical scientific premises is to miss the point. The settings are not more than fabulous window dressing - fantasy masquerading as sci-fi. It is the exploration of the human condition in each tale that Bradbury is concerned with, and they are timeless.

As such, while time has not been entirely kind to this screen adaption of 'The Illustrated Man', its emotional core remains intact. The Bradbury flair for the weird and the wonderful is untarnished, and his thoughts still clear. You just need to take a good long look at a rainbow afterwards.

Succulent Bava, served extra-rare

A note: Was this movie ever called in English HATCHET FOR A HONEYMOON, rather than the awkward HATCHET FOR THE HONEYMOON? I seem to recall this from a Leonard Maltin book circa 1978. Or am I as cracked as Bava's protagonist?

For my money, this is primo vintage Bava--which is to say Dario Argento in top hat and tails, Jess Franco with a finishing-school diploma, or, to look at the glass as half empty, Richard Lester after three hits of dirty windowpane acid.

To top this voiceover narration, you'd have to go either to BARRY LYNDON or, on the other hand, MASSACRE MAFIA STYLE: "My name is John Harrington. I'm thirty years old. I am a paranoiac. Paranoiac! What a marvellous world. So delicate. And full of possibilities. The fact is, I'm completely mad." And so is Bava's odyssey through the crazy-straw-shaped brain of J. Harrington, Esq., a hunky sociopath whose sexual fires are only stoked by burying a hatchet in the flesh of virginal-looking brides in their white-veiled drag--and, when they have the ill fortune to be there, their bridegrooms.

The hyper-lusciosity of Bava's style suggests a Bertolucci blissfully unconcerned with agrarian collectivism. Mate that rococo with Nicolas Roeg's brand of kaleidoscopus maximus and you have an inkling of what Signior Mario is up to. Note to Greil Marcus: as a sequel to "Lipstick Traces," how about a book tracing the parallel histories of canonical surrealism (Bunuel-Dali-Aragon-Bataille) and Italian horror of the seventies?

Review :

This movie is sublimely ridiculous. Watch and enjoy.

The cast of this 1969 movie alone is enough to recommend it. A pre Odd Couple Tony Randall. A post Psycho Janet Leigh as his wife . Jim Backus being Jim Backus. Roddy McDowell somewhere between Flicka and Planet of the Apes. Richard Dreyfus facing his FIRST shark encounter (sharks were old hat to him by the time Jaws came around) Ken Barry actually playing a bad guy! And Charlotte Rae who apparently had other charges in her care prior to Willis, Arnold, Blair, Jo, Natalie and Tootie.

If that doesn't give you an idea of the delightful absurdity of this movie add in a couple of dolphins that have seen 1 too many Lassie movies. Sprinkle it with sonar jamming rock music and Harvey Lemboeck. I defy anyone with an ounce of humor in their soul not to laugh at the silliness of this movie.

So what's the movie about? Okay if you MUST know, Tony Randall has invented an underwater home and to prove to his boss (Jim Backus) that living under water isn't a crazy idea Tony talks his family into moving into his invention for a month. Tony and Janet have 2 teenagers that are part of a rock band that's about to go big time thanks to record company owner and boy-genius Roddy McDowell, so naturally the entire band goes along for the ride including a lead guitarist played by Richard Dreyfus. You'll find Janet's "futuristic" kitchen quite amusing...as well as the idea that when the kids practice their rock music it jams Navy sonar! Oh, did I mention that Ken Barry is a conniving coworker of Tony's and who's trying to sabotage Tony's work and take his job??

Hollywood version of Indian manhunt

Beautifully filmed, the movie creates the same edge-of-your-seat tension to see the outcome as the book by Harry Lawton, and, indeed, the real events must have engendered.

Too bad Hollywood once again played with the truth. While much of the film appears to fairly closely follow history, with a few excusable abbreviations, two crucial incidents and Redford's character are Hollywood inventions. They add to the drama and mystery of the sad story, but considering most people know only the history they see on film, it's a shame to see the truth corrupted.

Blake is outstanding. Redford is uncomfortable trying on the cowboy persona at that early stage. Ross is completely unbelievable as an Indian.

The movie captures the essence of this turn-of-the-last-century western environment transitioning from horse & buggy to automobile, from cowboy to urbanite, from the remaining blend of Indian autonomy side-by-side with encroaching white man encroachment and ultimate domination.

The fact that it took several posses of 75+ men on horse, with supplies, days and nights of tracking to catch up with one Indian on foot without more than a rifle, a few shells and only what food he could scrounge, speaks volumes for the Indian-vs-white fight for survival and the tactics used.

Quietly intense, the movie is dramatic, captivating, and over-ridingly sad at the unavoidable outcome of the decidedly unbalanced "battle."

Better than the first one

Better than the first one, in my opinion, though it lacks the originality of the first movie. The characters still ain't fully developed, and the insults are even fewer in this movie than they were in the first.

In this movie Olsen-Banden try to keep themselves on the right side of the law, which is fouled up by an American gang who robs the Danish National Bank while the Olsen gang participate in a social-rehabilitation program as cleaners at the bank. The Olsen gang are the only witnesses to the robbery and is therefor blamed for the crime by the police. So the only way out for Egon, Benny, and Kjeld is to steal the loot from the American gang before that gang leaves Denmark, and then present it to the police and claim their innocence. Benny's brother Dynamit-Harry (Dynamite-Harry) is introduced in this movie. Harry's a drunken explosives 'expert' and really isn't too much of a help. Preben Kaas is just wonderful in the role of Harry!

Funniest line of the movie's gotta be: Benny: "Og Kjeld solgte japanske *?*-pinde på Langelinje og blev smidt i vandet af en svensker" Keld: "Det var aldeles ikke nogen svensker, han var bare almindelig fuld!" / Benny: "And Kjeld solgt japanese *?*-sticks at Langelinje and was thrown into the water by a Swede" Kjeld: "He wasn't a Swede, he was just a drunk!"

Review :

Entertaining old-fashioned swordsplay adventure from Shaw Brothers

I confess, I have a soft spot for these old-fashioned Chinese Wu Xia swordplay films, especially when they're happening in the fairy tale -like "martial world". At worse, they're harmless and forgettable, silly little camp packages. At best, they make you wish you were a child again and seeing this for the first time, eyes wide with amazement. GOLDEN SWORD surely fell into the latter category more than the first, taking me back to the time when I was about 10 years old and literally gluttoning all kinds of adventure stories, were they films, books or comics. A damn shame these films weren't around in Finland back then.

I won't go into the details of the story this time, suffice it to say it's quite typical of the genre and includes old themes of loyalty and courage, heroes defying gravity and other natures of law, a bit of intrigue and some subtle comedy, and quite well executed love story. The twists keep you interested enough, and it all has some sweet fairytale mood in it, both visually and story-wise. For some reason this reminded me very much of the Hollywood historical romance spectacles of the Hollywood in the 40's - 50's era, don't know exactly why. Perhaps the feeling came from the heavy use of studio sets and staging of 'outdoor' scenes, which gave the film lots of old-fashioned sweet charm. As a westerner, however, I found one very campy moment in it; there was one scene including dancing and singing that made me wish the time would fly a little faster, and / but luckily the scene was over quite quickly. In the long run, it didn't take the magic away from the film, and somehow also strengthened, in a good way, the 50's mood I just mentioned, since many of those films included these corny musical scenes.

If you're looking for loads of action and detailed fighting choreography, you can forget it: fight scenes are older than old school, more of a swashbuckling lookalikes than monumental opuses of Kung Fu style introductions. For me this wasn't a letdown, I enjoyed the 'lighter' approach, as it fits very well in the general style of the film.

GOLDEN SWORD is definitely a dated Wu Xia movie, but not at all worthless in it's efforts. You can watch this one with quite an empty head, as it does not offer you any mind blowing philosophy, but that's not a bad thing, since it doesn't even try. It has some eerie charm from the world and time already passed that kept me entertained and amused for the film's running length. Recommended for the people who like old adventure films and want to take a quick peek at their childhood.

This is my truth. What is yours?
